Trinidad and Tobago is an island country in the northern edge of South America, lying just off the coast of north eastern Venezuela and south of Grenada. Trinidad and Tobago are south easterly islands of the Antilles. The diverse religious and cultural background of the islanders is the reason for many festivities and ceremonies throughout the year. The Carnival in the Caribbean is definitely among the world’s greatest parties. Every year on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent, thousands of costumed people parade on the streets in an annual street party. The “Greatest Show on Earth” is accompanied by music, concerts and competitions.

Trinidad and Tobago are well-known for tasty and spicy foods, such as sada, dhalpouri and phoulourie (small balls made of ground chick peas and flour). Rotis (Indian bread stuffed with Channa or green beans, pumpkin and mangoes) are popular among the people of the islands.  Barbecued chicken is a popular on the islands and a food that is also worth trying is the famous Bake and Shark where pieces of shark are deep fried and served with a sauce. For the sweeter tooth there are local sweets such as Paw Paw Ball, Ladoo, Sugar Cake and Jub Jub.

The Leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs on Trinidad’s Mathura beach and can be seen every year around Easter. The Emperor Valley Zoo and botanical gardens can be visited at Port of Spain. The garden contains many species of plants and is conveniently situated next to the zoo.

The twin island republic is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches, stunning coral reefs and golden sunsets.  Pigeon Point Beach, Tobago, is located on a private coconut estate and offers a beach bar and restaurant. The Englishman’s Bay Beach has a freshwater stream flowing from the rainforest and coral reefs with tropical fish. Bucco Reef, Tobago, is a natural coral reef and glass bottom boat tours are available. Maracas Bay Beach, Trinidad, is a popular place where many guests stay for the Carnival celebration.

The main airport is Piarco International Airport on Trinidad and there are direct air services available from New York, Houston, Canada, Toronto, London, Miami, Orlando, Panama City, Georgetown and other Caribbean islands.
