Sony Xperia Z1

The smartphone world is currently rocked by some really impressive high-end devices, but right now, my attention is dedicated fully to the Sony Xperia Z1, the heir to the Xperia flagship throne which belonged to the old Z. Well, now, as the Japanese really try their best to deliver top-notch gadgets that are worthy of riding amongst the best, we have 1 Xperia to rule them all (from its Sony family) and bring serious competition to its opponents from Nokia, Apple, Samsung, HTC or LG. Enough with the small talk and let’s get to more serious facts. How does it look like, what does it offer and all that – I’m going to get into details about anything that might interest the average smartphone customer, so, follow the next review and find out more about it and if it fits your needs.

Sony Xperia Z1 Original PackageFirst of all, let’s take a look in its box. Here, besides the phone, stand only a charger head and a microUSB cable that serves for making data connections and recharging the handset. No headphones, unfortunately.
One of the things that I really love about the Xperia Z1 is its stylish look. The phone measures 144 x 74 x 8.5 mm and has a weight of 170 grams. Even if it seems to be a little too heavy, compared to others, just wait until you hear more about its internal and external offerings, as this fellow has a lot on his mind and on his shoulders, I give you that. But let’s get back to its look. The Z1 features an exquisite design, being made only from high-quality materials. Its sides are made from a very durable glass, which is scratch resistant and offers a big amount of elegance to the smartphone, along with the subtle, classy aluminum line that separates the two panels. The Z1 has a premium feel and you’ll see what I’m talking about when actually managing it for a little while.
Another strong point is that the Xperia Z1 is IP58 certified for being a water resistant and dust proof phone, so it can join you in the shower, at the beach or even dance with you in the rain.
The frontal part of the stylish body is occupied by a splendid 5 inches Triluminous display which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a pixel density of 441 ppi and is powered by the Sony X-Reality Engine. The colors are vibrant, the viewing angles are great and so is the sunlight legibility. Clearly, the Z1 display will bring a lot of pleasure to your eyes.
Sony Xperia Z1 screenIn terms of user interface, the Xperia Z1 comes loaded with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and will have support for the 4.4 version, KitKat. The UI has been slightly customized by Sony and is very friendly and intuitive, thus browsing through it will be a wonderful user experience. For this, we also have to thank the internal specifications: the Z1 holds a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, having a quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor, 2 GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. The internal memory reaches only 16 GB, but can be expanded with a microSD card. This mixture of features offers the Xperia Z1 a place well-deserved among the best performers out there.
One intriguing thing about the Xperia Z1 is its 20.7 MP camera. It features a backside illuminated Exmor RS 1/2,3” sensor and a wide F/2,0 aperture, image stabilization, HDR, panorama and pretty much everything you could wish for from a smartphone camera. Well, almost. The image quality is very good, with a good amount of resolved detail, punchy colors and a good contrast, but I must confess that I would’ve expected more from it. Anyways, let’s move on from still image to video. The Z1 shoots 1080p videos @30 fps and produces some pretty great ones.
For listening to music, you probably expect to hear about the Walkman music player. Well, it’s here alright and has the usual support for SensMe (filters your music by mood), the Infinity functionality for searching stuff about your music (its lyrics,video-clip and more). The audio quality is great, with or without your headphones plugged in.
Watching movies is also more than enjoyable, as the Z1 holds support for the majority of popular formats, such as DivX, Mp4, MOV and others.
An FM Radio is also included in the package and holds support for RDS.
Diving with Sony Xperia Z1In terms of connectivity, the Xperia Z1 holds a rich package that includes quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 3G with 42Mbps HSPA, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and a MHL microUSB port.
Surfing the web is also great, as the big, beautiful screen makes sure you’re being offered a nice image quality and the internals try their best for delivering a smooth browsing experience. And they do, as everything goes by the book and you won’t have anything against the Z1’s browsing performance.
In conclusion, I really hope that I’ve managed to cover everything that has importance for you regarding a top-notch smartphone like the Sony Xperia Z1. The Japanese did a great job and offered the world one of the best smartphones that can be found at the moment. This highly-skilled performer is also a tough guy, like I’ve mentioned earlier, so if you dream about having something really bright, but also with physical skills such as water resistance, this is the best choice you can make – but that’s only my humble opinion.
