Sony Xperia Tablet ZAs I’ve been reviewing a lot of smartphones lately, it’s time to turn my attention towards the tablet world. If you’re thinking about buying one soon, you’re in for a treat from Sony, as they have something really special for you. I’m talking about the Xperia Tablet Z, the cousin of the Xperia Z smartphone. It comes with the same water and dust resistant capabilities and also features a slim, hot looking body that hides some nice specs underneath it. Feeling interested ? Check it out in the following review and see if it’s the right choice to make.
The Xperia Tablet Z measures 266 x 172 x 6.9 mm and has a weight of 495 grams, being ultra slim and lightweight, so you’ll find out that it’s very easy to hold it in one hand. A nice advantage over the Xperia Z smartphone is that the Tablet Z features a cooler back, which has a matte finish, thus offering a good hand grip and also keeps fingerprints away from sticking to it. Besides looking great, the elegant device is also a tough guy, as it’s IP57 certified for being dust proof and water resistant, so this really makes out tablet an exquisite device.
Sony Xperia Tablet Z niceThe Tablet Z features a 10.1 inches LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen that has a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels, is backed by the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 and has a pixel density of 224 ppi. It’s protected by a shatter proof glass, so it earns even more points on the toughness scale. The screen offers a wonderful image quality, being very bright and showing some vibrant colors, wide viewing angles and good contrast. The sunlight legibility is also very good.
The Tablet Z comes loaded with Android v4.1.2 Jelly Bean and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 chipset, having a quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 GPU, 2 GB of RAM and is available in two versions, one with 16 GB of internal storage and the other with 32. The internal memory can be expanded up to 64 GB with a microSD card.
The user interface has been customized by Sony and looks very nice, offering a pleasant user experience to say the least. The tablet is very snappy, so you won’t be having any lag problems or anything like that.
Sony Xperia Tablet Z waterIn terms of connectivity, the Tablet Z is available in two versions, Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi+LTE. The latter features quad-band 2G, 3G with HSPA+ and penta-band 4G LTE.
Both of them support NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n with DLNA and Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 MHL which is used for charging, making data transfers and connecting to your computer or TV. You also have an infrared port, which controls CD and DVD players, TVs, PCs, projectors and others with the Remote control application. Pretty damn cool, don’t you think? Let’s carry on.
For surfing the web, you have two browsers, a noobish one called Small browser and Google Chrome. The first only handles one tab and it’s pretty useless, if you ask me. The real thing is Chrome, as you probably know it. It can sync with your desktop browser and does a great job, you’ll definitely love surfing the web on the Tablet Z.
For taking photos, the Tablet Z features an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus that takes pictures at a maximum resolution of 3248 x 2432 pixels and features geo-tagging, face and smile detection, touch focus, has settings for adjusting the white balance, ISO, metering and others. The image quality is very good.
For video recording, you have a capable camera that shoots 1080p videos at 30 fps.
There’s also a secondary 2.2 MP front facing camera on board.
For listening to music, you have the Walkman player which features equalizer presets, the ClearAudio+ enhancement, xLOUD, Surround sound, it also allows you to look-up your song’s video on YouTube, search for its lyrics or information about it on Wikipedia. The Tablet Z holds stereo speakers and offers a very good audio quality with and without the headphones plugged in.
An FM Radio is also present and has RDS support and TrackID for song recognition.
The tablet’s video player is also very capable and features support for DivX, XviD, MP4 or MKV.
Among other cool stuff, the Xperia Tablet Z features the OfficeSuite for viewing documents, the Google Now voice assistant which is a really good companion, the Socialife application for managing your Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts, a GPS receiver with support for A-GPS and GLONASS and so on.
In conclusion, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is really bad news for its competitors, as it’s the hottest tablet I’ve ever seen, being also a tough fellow that’s willing to be taken outside for showing off its skills and enjoying the waves of jealousy coming from the other tablekids. What more can you ask for, really?
