by

Samsung Galaxy S5 ActiveIf you’re an active person and enjoy spending your time in the great outdoors or if you just have a more intense (if not dangerous) lifestyle, I’m betting that you’ll be quite interested by a smartphone specially designed to join you in your adventures. Folks, I’m talking about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, a real soldier from the smartphone world, the kind that will stand with you side by side and endure whatever harsh conditions you’re enduring without making a fuss. This trustworthy companion will serve you well, saving you from worrying about its safety if it happens to fall in a puddle of mud or anything like that. Follow the next review and find out more about this awesome device – I guarantee it that you’ll be at least a little bit impressed.
In its retail box, the S5 Active is joined by a pair of stereo earphones, a charger and a microUSB cable for re-charging your handset or making data transfers. Some user manuals are also here.
Now, we’ll get to my favorite part, its appearance. The Galaxy S5 Active stands at 145.3 x 73.4 x 8.9 mm and has a weight of 170 grams, which is reasonable if you come to think about its size and body components. As I’ve previously said in the beginning, we’re dealing with a tough guy over here, and that’s because its IP67 certification for being dust and water resistant for up to 30 minutes and 1 m, and the MIL-STD-810G certification for resisting to rain, humidity, dust, salt, vibration, solar radiation and thermal shock. If this isn’t impressive, I don’t know what is. This fellow here is proud to show off an excellent build quality, being able to take a few kicks and survive in some rather nasty conditions. Its design also gives up its strength, having some color-tones and patterns that resemble with something which just survived a war. Handling it won’t be a problem, as its design is well balanced and offers a good hand grip.
The Galaxy S5 Active features a 5.1 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, offering a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a pixel density of 432 ppi and being protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. As expected, the image quality is excellent, with punchy colors, great contrast and very wide viewing angles. The sunlight legibility is excellent.
The Galaxy S5 Active comes loaded with the latest and greatest from Android, v4.4.2 KitKat, and has been customized (as usual) with Touch Wiz. The user interface is, by far, one of the friendliest and most intuitive around, and thanks will offer a flawless performance due to its powerful hardware. Let’s get to that, shall we?
The handset holds inside a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, having a quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, which can be extended with a microSD card of up to 128 GB. Having these specs ocould nly mean one thing: an excellent user experience, everything works like a charm and lag issues or stuff like that are definitely out of the question here.
The connectivity department is rich in support for quad band GSM, GPRS, EDGE, LTE (if it’s available), 3G, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac with DLNA, Hotspot and Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0 with EDR, LE and A2DP, microUSB 2.0 with On-the-go support, TV out, NFC and there’s also an IR blaster for allowing you to use the handset as a remote control.
Browsing is done through Google Chrome or the Android browser, which has been customized by Samsung and holds support for Air View. Both browsers are extremely capable and offer a plethora of options and settings for improving the experience, which is great.
The Galaxy S5 Active comes with a 16 MP camera on board, which is able to capture stills with a maximum resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and holds a LED flash for assisting in low light conditions. The camera application is rich in features and has support for touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization and so on. The Aqua Mode is a fun feature which allows you to take pictures underwater. Cool or what?
The image quality offered by the pictures is wonderful, with beautiful and accurate colors, excellent contrast and a high amount of details.
The video camera is also very capable and produces some gorgeous 2160p videos @ 30 fps.
Some other things that might interest you are the GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS support, Google Maps as a navigation solution, the Samsung Apps for improving the security (which are able to find your phone if it gets lots, or reset/lock it if it gets stolen), S Health for those of you who work out, some great audio and video players and so on. The audio output is very good with or without the headphones plugged in.
In terms of battery life, the Galaxy S5 Active holds a 2,800 mAh battery and will hang on for up to almost three days under a moderate usage.
